Toledo FedEx hub tour – September 20, 2012 – 3-5pm! ** NOTE TIME CHANGE
Tour summary: What an amazing place for packaging to zoom along the way to every corner of the world! Thanks to the crew and especially to Jeff Beckwith and Kevin for hosting our group and giving us a sneak peak inside the working of a high tech FedEx hub. The truck in one door, scanned, tagged, sorted, conveyed and directed and re-loaded for outgoing local shipments and continued journeys to distant and near sites. All the folks we saw during the tour were working hard (and fast!!) to make sure the packages were on their best path to the next location. The loaders were sporting a wireless finger-tip scanner and the conveyers have “360 view” of each package at high speed as they travel through the sorting system. In-line weighing and measuring system helps identify each individual item for best possible path to the final destination. It was interesting to see how FedEx takes special care of each package and their expertise is clearly directed at the best service for their customers. Package inspections and quality review of special case packages and their ways of getting packages that may need special attention was a highlight. It was a surprise to see how many parts flow through their delivery system with out a box – heaven forbid!! Seriously though, tire and several other parts ship without trouble through the very flexible and well planned FedEx system. (still want to see them in a box!) – stay tuned to Glass City for more upcoming programs and tours for our local packaging professionals. ~Brian Walker
